Melvin’s Make-a-Match: Comparing Fractions

Posted by eastwoldblog on March 22, 2011

In Maths this week we are looking at Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion!

Today we were revising comparing fractions and equivalent fractions.

Cyberchase has this game which is a really good place to practice your fractions.

Melvin is either a forgetful or very untidy wizard.

He has got all his potions muddled and needs to put them back into pairs.

This is where you come in!

Sort Melvin’s potion bottles back into pairs by selcting them from the shelves.

There are several levels of slightly increasing complexity.

Good luck

Mr W.

Banana Hunt – Angle Finding Game

Posted by eastwoldblog on November 8, 2010

Play “Banana Hunt”

As this week we are looking at ‘Angles’ in Numeracy, I thought I would share this game with you.

It is great for practising your estimation of angles.

All you have to do is ‘Drag the Monkey’ to where you think the specified angle size is and click on ‘Check’. You are awarded bananas according to how well you do!

Exactly right = 10

1 degree out = 8

2 degrees out = 6

3 degrees out = 4

4 degrees out = 2

5 degrees out = 1

6+ degrees out = 0

I have scored in the 80’s at my best – I am sure with practice you can match or better that!

Post your ‘honest’ scores in the comments box.

Happy ‘angling’

Speed Grid Challenge – How quick are your mental maths skills?

Posted by eastwoldblog on March 23, 2010

Bethany asked for the link to these Maths Games.

So, as I am always happy to answer a request, here they are!

How fast can you do the addition and subtraction grids?

The record for the Addition game stands at a ridiculous 10 questions correct in 19 seconds – I wonder what Daniel is doing now?

Post your times in the comments!

Mr W.

——————————————-

Update: 24/03/10

Gridlock is another great game – this time for two players.

The instructions to play are on the page but the basic idea is to score the most points whilst preventing your opponents from scoring more than you – or can you “GRIDLOCK” them?

Hope you like it!

Yahtzee! The Game of Chance, Risk & Probability

Posted by eastwoldblog on March 9, 2010

In Maths this week, we are looking at Probability and Chance!

This dice game is incredibly popular in the Far East and was a popular game in Britain a few years ago.

It involves using your number skills and knowledge of chance and probability.

Play “Yahtzee!” at Ambleside Primary School

Playing Yahtzee:

You roll the five dice by clicking on the ROLL button.

After each roll you have to click on the dice to select them and you can roll them again up to two times.

When you have had all your rolls click on a score box to add the score for that combination of dice.

After each roll you MUST select a score box – even if it means you get zero!

A SMALL STRAIGHT is 4 scores in order e.g. 1 2 3 & 4

A LARGE STRAIGHT is all 5 dice in order 1 2 3 4 5

A FULL HOUSE is 5 dice all the same

A YAHTZEE is 5 sixes.

A CHANCE adds up all the scores of the dice.

Want to play at home?

Download the Yahtzee Scorecard here!

GOOD LUCK

Do you have what it takes to build a planet from scratch?

Posted by eastwoldblog on March 1, 2010

Planet 10 – World Builder

You get to decide everything about your new planet!

Gases  in the atmosphere, water, land, tilt of the planet, moons, rings, life from bacteria to humans!

Can you build a stable planet or are you building a planet doomed to destruction!?

You choose!

I have always liked this activity, and I find that adults and children alike enjoy it too!

Have fun and I hope your planet works out how you want it to!

There is also the chance to investigate our solar system too – find out about each of the planets. (I am not not sure if they still include Pluto as a planet now it has been reclassified)

If you can get past the American History – this is good fun!

See how you get on!

WARNING!! Seriously Addictive!

Click on the RED block

Now move the RED block to avoid crashing with the BLUE blocks.

Simple!

US Air Force pilots are expected to last 2 MINUTES!!

A Y3 lasted 10.871 seconds

A Y6 lasted 16.372 seconds

I have managed 61 seconds (but it was a long time ago and I haven’t practised recently!)

Translation Golf

Posted by eastwoldblog on February 23, 2010

Translation Golf

Translation Golf

This online game supports what we have been looking at in maths this week.

Translations, Rotations, Reflections – use your skills to score the lowest on the 9 hole course.

Use the buttons to rotate, reflect, or translate the golf ball.

Try to work out the transformations which get the ball in the hole.

Just like real golf, the lowest score wins!

Post your scores as comments – I might ask for proof if you claim REALLY LOW scores!

Have fun – Apply your Maths Knowledge!

Love Puzzles? Play Launch Ball!

Posted by eastwoldblog on January 6, 2010

Do you love to try and solve puzzles?

Yes, you do?!

Then Launch Ball is the game for you!

Launch Ball is a game on the Science Museum website: Play Launch Ball!

You have to make the ball reach the target using blocks which have different powers!

You have fans, magnets, batteries, rubber blocks that make your ball bounce, cushions that stop it bouncing, torches that create light and mirrors to reflect it!

You can test and practice to see what happens and you can then improve by moving the blocks around!

Great fun and really addictive!

WARNING: Some of the levels later on are quite difficult – but keep trying they can all be done! (I know I have tried and done them!)

Let me know what you think of Launch Ball by voting in my new poll!
