The Highwayman – Alfred Noyes

Posted by eastwoldblog on April 29, 2010

Over the next couple of weeks we will be studying Classic Narrative poems like ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’, ‘The Walrus and The Carpenter’ and Alfred Noyes classic tale of thieves, romance, love, bravery and death in ‘The Highwayman’.

We will also be looking at some slightly different versions, like in this video:

The music and lyrics are by a Canadian singer/songwriter called Loreena McKennitt.

She ha taken the words of Alfred Noyes poem and set them to music. She has missed little bits out and changed the words very slightly in places – but the poem still has the same story.

I am not sure who made the animation but they have done a pretty good job.

Enjoy the video:

What is your opinion of the poem?

Do you like it or not? Why?

Which version do you prefer – the Poem or the Song? Why?

Share your thoughts in a comment…

I love this poem, I discovered it thought the song by Loreena McKennitt who I think really brings it to life.

What book are above pages taken from?

I like the illustrations and have been looking for this or similar publications, but have only found a black and white line drawn one on Amazon.

    • The song is wonderful.
I’m not sure what book the pictures came from – I think it was an old encyclopedia – “Childcraft”??
It was an illustrated children’s encyclopedia, which I think is out of print.

      Hope that’s helpful.

BEAUTIFUL – REMINDS ME OF ENYA!!! MY SISTER USED TO RECITE THIS POEM TO ME WHEN I WAS A SMALL CHILD – I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN IT – CERTAINLY ONE OF THE BEST EVER WRITTEN, AND NOT SPOILED BY SETTING IT TO MUSIC.
